As society has experienced the recent deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner through media coverage, it has began a dialogue regarding the treatment of young men of color and the attitude of law enforcement and lawmakers in regards to the safety and security of the urban black population. Between the World and Me is a letter Ta-Nehisi Coates writes to his teenage son, one that describes the tragedy and truth of the black experience, and focuses on what it means to be a child and parent in the black community and how lives are impacted by the inherent racism and societally engrained perspective held by those in power.

Coates begins his narrative addressing the lack of prosecution of the police officer killing of Michael Brown, a young, black man. After hearing that the killer of Brown would go free, Coates' son Samori leaves the room and is later heard crying...

The original book is a letter by Ta-Nehesi Coates to his son, Samori. He starts in Philadelphia where he was raised in the inner city as a child of a black family. What does it mean to be a child and parent in the black community? What are the social, cultural and legal realities? (Important to note here that this book is based on Ta-Nehesi's experience in America and is written for/to Americans although folks from other places may well enjoy it.) This DETAILED review by Instaread starts off with a 10 page (Kindle) summary providing the reader with a good synopsis of the book. It then delves into some of the main characters and analysis.

Who are "The Dreamers"? Why does Ta-Nehisi conclude, among other things that the black community is "at the mercy of these Dreamers"? Instaread describes the text as being "like a sharp slap in the face..."

Some of the other themes discussed are:
>>> Racism
>>> The dynamic between children and parents in the African American community
>>> Finding freedom as a black man in America

A needed punch in the stomach. Since I want to be part of the solution I wanted to hear what he wrote.
helpful for discussion
My mistake - thought this was the actual book. I didn't find the summary and analysis of interest.
A must read book. I was stopped dead in my tracks several times while reading it should be required reading.
In the wake of the tragic events in Ferguson, MO, where teen Michael Brown was killed by a town cop, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote a book in the form of a letter to his teenage son, who had been traumatized by the entire affair. In Between the World and Me Coates made an effort to explore and explain institutional and cultural racism and the corrosive effect it has on individuals and society.
Instaread’s Summary & Analysis of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me is a thorough of the book, paying particular emphasis on the author’s views on the tragedy and truth of the black experience in America, and what it means to be a young man or parent in the black community, and how lives are impacted by the actions of those in power, who often act in racist ways without even being aware of it.
While the grammar of the summary is sometimes weak, it is nonetheless gives a profound view itself of the content of Coates’ work, and even though not explicitly mentioned, alludes to the effect of majority privilege and how it warps the view of those considered to be ‘inferior,’ or lower in social status in a society.
The analysis could, in fact, gone into more detail in those areas, but it still remains an excellent introduction to a work that should be read by anyone, regardless of their ethnic identification, who wishes to have a better understanding how the artificial construct of race impacts us all.
My feeling throughout the reading of this book was that a gentle, sensitive soul was asking me to look at race differently. As the book progresses we learn how institutional racism is and how difficult it is to liberate ourselves from it. The unfortunate consequence of this is that it exaggerates the divide between blacks and whites, since Whites can have no idea of the black experience, hard as they may try.
While the price was OK, I would recommend reading the actual book, Between The World And Me, rather than this summary. I was expecting the summary to clarify my understanding of the book, but I found the organization and style to be a bit clumsy and confusing, and it didn't really offer me any more insight to the book. Ta-Nehisi's book is very readable, by contrast, and, though I'm not a fast reader, it really didn't take me that long to read, so it really didn't pay to read this summary. Bottom line, read the real thing, and pass on this summary.
